These
workshops by Oscar McLennan are designed to use improvising with text
as a means of generating ideas for creating a solo performance. A series
of diverse exercises are used to overcome any intimidation participants
may feel at being faced with a blank page. Simple exercises such as
'Write for ten minutes whatever comes into your mind on the colour black,'
lead on to more challenging ones, such as writing to yourself in a mirror,
or writing a love letter to an object or feature of the room. Over the
course of several days workshops, participants produce a body of text
which is then shaped, with the help of Oscar, into a short 5 - 8 minute
performance piece. This process leads to a public presentation of the
work produced. These workshops are suitable for anyone with an adventurous
spirit and an open mind, regardless of previous experience.
Oscar
is often joined by visual/performance artist Anne Seagrave in these
projects, who introduces participants to the use of movement, light,
sound, slides and video in a Live Art context.
Oscar
McLennan & Anne Seagrave also curate Live Art platforms, a selected
mixture of new performance, installational & video work. The two
latest of these are: GET UP (click
here for press), at the SS Michael & John, a co-production
with 2002 Dublin Fringe Festival, and BACK UP (click
here to see review), at The City Arts Centre, a co-production
with the 2003 Dublin Fringe Festival.
